Packing Light for Air Force Basic Training

Packing Light for Air Force Basic TrainingPacking Light for Air Force Basic TrainingYour journey to Air Force Basic Military Training (AFBMT) should start months in advance before getting on the plane. You will need to pack the right gear on the day you leave, but you should also prepare physically for a rigorous training cycle, and learn basic military information (ranks, orders of the sentry, history). Your recruiter should help you with the physical and mental side, but he/she should have given you an official list of what you are allowed to take with you to basic. The list has been around for many years, and there are no exceptions to bringing things not on the list. But, just in case, one of the first things that occurs at Lackland is a complete search of your personal possessions. Anything not approved will be confiscated and stored until after graduation. While the instructors at Lackland Air Force Base have prepared this official list of items you will need at basic training, any good recruiter will tell you that one of the first things you should do with this list is lose it. Air Force Training Instructors (called T.I.s) at basic training love it when everyone in their flight looks the saatkorn acts the same talks the same owns the same gear. So, on day one or two after arrival, you will be taken to the Troop Mall, which is a small BX (Base Exchange) dedicated to basic training recruits. The Troop Mall has absolutely everything (for the most part) you will need to purchase for basic training, and you will find that your T.I. likes you a whole lot better if your gear looks just like everyone elses. Additionally, the lighter you pack, the better you will like it. Just bring money to buy what you need. Another reason to pack light is that when you graduate, you will only be allowed three bags (one carry-on and two bags that can be checked). This is true, even if your technical school is going to be at Lackland. One of those bags will be your duffle bag f ull of uniforms. The other will be a garment bag to carry your dress uniforms, and the third bag will have the civilian clothes and personal affects you brought with you. Heres what I recommend you bring with you Paper WorkCollege transcripts, Civil Air Patrol Certificates, and any JROTC Certificates. Actually, you wont need these at basic training, but you will want them with you during your final trip to MEPS because college credits and/or JROTC can give you advanced enlistment rank.Drivers license / ID. You wont be driving while at Air Force Basic Training, but some Air Force jobs require a drivers license. If you cant prove that you have one, you will not be eligible for consideration for any of those AFSCs (jobs). Alien card and/or naturalization certificates. (If applicable).Marriage license and any birth certificates for your dependents. These are required to start your housing allowance, family separation allowance, and to obtain/complete the necessary application for de pendent ID cards, which are necessary for military medical benefits, and shopping privileges.Social Security Card.Enlistment Contract. This will be provided to you at MEPS after you take the final active duty oath (except Guard/Reserve, who do not take a final oath). Banking Information. Youll need the name of your bank, the bank routing number, and the account number. If you bring a blank check or blank deposit slip, this will have the required information on it. This is required because the military requires your pay to be direct-deposited in a bank account. Youll also want to bring an ATM card for the accountso that you will have easy access to your money.Cash. No more than about $40. You will be allowed to keep cash in your security drawer, but you will have to record the serial number in a notebookand keep that list up-to-date. Prescriptions. You will not be allowed to continue to take any prescription medication that you may bring with you (this is because there is no way to tell if youve substituted a prescription for an illegal narcotic). However, your prescription will be examined by a military doctor after arrival, and if necessary you will be re-issued the medication from the military pharmacy. This applies to birth control pills as well. You may continue to take birth control pills during basic, but your prescription will be re-issued by the military pharmacy. Over-the-counter medication is not allowed in basic training. If you bring any with you, it will be taken away. Toothbrush, toothbrush tray, and toothpaste/powder. Your toothbrush tray should be the square kind. If you get the round kind, and it rolls when the T.I. opens your drawer to inspect it, it will be out of place, and youll get a demerit. For toothpaste, get the flip lid kind. The screw top is almost impossible to keep clean.Shampoo. Again, this should be a square-type bottle or tube, so it doesnt roll around in your drawer.Soap (bar or liquid).Note Liquid soap is easier to keep in inspection condition. Deodorant.Ball-point pen (black). The official list says black or blue, but youll find out that the Air Force likes official documents signed with black ink.Notebook and paper.Bring only a small notebook to take notes for the first couple of days. This is one of the standardization things. The T.I. is going to want everyone to purchase the Air Force Style notebook at the BX.Laundry soap.Only take laundry soap if you have allergies and require a specific brand. Otherwise, its traditional for all the recruits in the flight to contribute money and purchase one gigantic box at the BX foruseof the entire flight. Shaving Equipment. You can bring/use an electric razor, but they hard to keep clean enough to reisepass inspection.Civilian Clothes.Enough to last three or four days. You will receive your initial uniform issue on Thursday or Friday of the week of arrival. After that, all your civilian clothes will be locked up until after graduation. Dont wear/bring anythi ng outlandish. Youdo notwant to stand out from the crowd during basic training.Civilian eyeglasses. If required to see, you will wear your civilianeyeglassesuntil your military glasses are issued, which takes about two weeks for most people. Once you receive your military glasses, youll be required to wear them for the remainder of basic training. Contact lenses case.If you wear contacts to basic, you will need the case to store them until after basic training. For safety reasons, you will not be allowed to wear contact lenses during basic training, so youll need to bring your civilian glasses, as well.Envelopes.To write home. Bring about ten or so envelopes, pre-stamped. Then, when you get a chance to write home, you never have to worry about running out of stamps.Stationary.Although, before you have a chance to write your first letter home, you will have already made your first shopping trip to the BX, and they have Air Force stationary that you may wish to purchase to impress the folks back home when you write your first letter. Brushes or Combs.More important for the females. You will only need a comb for your first day. By the second day, you wont have any hair left to comb.Underwear (male).Enough for three or four days. By Thursday or Friday of the first week, youll be issued sixpairsof boxers or briefs (your choice).Underwear (female). You will be required to purchase your underwear at the BX (too many different styles/sizes to issue it).Sanitary supplies.Napkins or tampons, your choice. I would recommend only bringing a few (if you expect your menstruation within the first week), as there will be ample opportunity to purchase these at the BX. Makeup. You are not going to be allowed to wear makeup during basic training until graduation day.Hair bands, bobby pins, etc. However, while in uniform (most of the time), you must wear your hair in such a style that it does not protrude past the bottom of the uniform collar, and does not interfere with the wear of t he hat. For most, with long hair, this means tying it up in a bun. Hair bands, bobby pins, etc., must closely match the color of your hair, or be clear.Nylons/pantyhose.You wont need these until the final week of training, so unless youre hard to fit, I would recommend purchasing these at the BX. If you bring your own, purchase the nude color. Watch. Not mandatory, but nice to have. You cant wear it all the time during basic, but you can wear a conservative watch most of the time. Anything on the official list that Ive not mentioned above, can wait until after you get to basic. Packing Tips Dont bring your own running shoes. Recruits are now required to wear the issue standard, New Balance, plain white running shoes, that youll purchase at the BX, shortly after arrival. Take care with what you pack. One of the very first things thats going to happen when you first meet your T.I., is that he/she is going to dump out your belongings in front of everyone, then he/she and his/her bud dy T.I.s are going to discuss anything unusual you may have brought. Even items as innocent as a book or magazine (What do you think this is, a library? Answer me) If you bring a book or magazine to read on the flight, leave it in the Reception area of the Airport. Try to pack clothes that have no writing, slogans, or pictures on them. This includes that neat Air Force T-Shirt the Recruiter gave you. (How dare you wear a shirt that indicates youre a member of my beloved Air Force? You have NOT earned the right to wear that, yet, scum ball, and you probably never will. Answer me) More About Air Force Basic Training Surviving Air Force Basic Training

5 Common Job Search Misconceptions

5 Common Job Search Misconceptions 5 Common Job Search Misconceptions Now is the time when the rubber hits the road for all those new year's resolutions. If you have promised yourself you'll start a new job search or reeenergize one that has stalled, then the best chance you have for seeing it through to a successful conclusion is to approach it with realistic expectations and honest self-insight.Here are some common misconceptions. If you can deal with them up-front, you will be more likely to adopt success-bound mental attitudes and job-search strategies.1. Just because you really need a job, you can find one quickly. Many job seekers have approached their task with glaring desperation. Too often, coaches and career counselors hear statements like: "Yes, I know I should work on the résumé and networking. But I don't have time to do that. I need a job right away."While unemployment does take a tremendous toll on savings and other family resources and the need for immediate work is real, there are no shortcuts. It is self-destructive to approach job hunting with desperation seeping out of every pore of your skin. People and opportunities will flee before you.Instead, accept your job search for what it is: a process that is likely to be lengthy and without shortcuts. When you embrace that reality, you can more easily settle down and systematically fashion and carry out a successful job-search strategy.2. It is obvious to all that your background is unique. No matter how remarkable your professional career has been up to this point, chances are there are many whose skills, accomplishments and career paths mirror your own. When you are applying for any given position, you will never know for sure how much competition you have and how you stack up against it.Your job is to figure out how to distinguish yourself from others and then to make that case. What one or two features of your professional life truly make you a standout? When you identify these characteristics, you are on your way to establishing your essential personal brand .3. When you tell people your job title and how long you have done it, they understand what you've done. Job titles mean various things in different companies or contexts. For example, a human resources director at a Fortune 100 company has a different function than someone with the same title in a much smaller or start-up company. When you introduce yourself as an "HR director with X years experience" you don't necessarily convey what you've done, how you've done it or what accolades you've received for your work. Such a self-description doesn't say anything about whether or not you are current with the latest and greatest knowledge and skills associated with your field. It is your job to convey through your résumé, networking and interviewing what exactly you've done, how you've done it, your accomplishments and the value you represent to your next employer.4. Employers are either mistaken or discriminatory when they reject you. When you are passed over for job after job, it is ea sy to believe either that you were booted by some computer, that the hiring authorities didn't give you the consideration you deserved or that you are being discriminated against for your age, sex, or some other reason. Of course, any of these are possible however, recruiters, HR staffers and hiring managers do have a clear idea of what they want in a successful candidate at the outset and the people they wind up hiring fulfill those criteria.Almost always, employers have the ability to choose among many highly qualified candidates for a position and that means that you might be one of those excellent candidates who just happens not to get the job you feel you deserve. Rather than playing the role of aggrieved victim, keep focused on the next opportunity.5. You think that you don't need to prepare for an interview. Never take an interview opportunity for granted, even if you don't think that the job being discussed is ideal for you. You need to demonstrate that you've done your home work about the company and the role you seek to fill. You need to be able to relate your experiences and achievements clearly and succinctly. You need to understand what issues are likely on the mind of the interviewer and more. An interview should never be understood or approached as a casual conversation and nothing can replace diligent preparation for it.When you approach your job search with a clear understanding of what the process is all about, you will improve your chances of making that process as short and successful as possible.Happy hunting!Arnie Fertig is the head coach of JOBHUNTERCOACH.COM, where he utilizes his extensive background in HR Staffing and as owner of a recruiting company to help mid-career job-hunters land their next job. 2017 Compensation Trends in Technology

2017 Compensation Trends in Technology 2017 Compensation Trends in Technology 2017 Compensation Trends in Technology Conlan If youve hired for any technology positions in the past year, you may have faced some sticker shock. Technology compensation continues to rise both in the technology sector itself and for tech positions in other industries. And that growth is posing some challenges for employers. Given the low unemployment rate, wage pressures and the looming talent shortage, especially within the tech sector, it has become increasingly difficult to fill open positions in the industry, says Mike Louer, the Chicago-based regional recruiting director for the central region for Randstad Technologies, an IT and tech staffing and recruiting provider. According to the Conference Board, salaries are expected to increase an average of 3% for jobs in tech in 2017. Heres whats driving those numbers this year. Smart Homes Require Smart Workers Louer attributes advancements in technology as part of the reason for hiring growth in some tech areas. The tech field continues to experience a boom in technological breakthroughs and innovation. As such, demand for roles within the tech sector have increasingly grown, he says. In particular, demandhas escalated for technology professionals such as big data engineers, who build and maintain large-scale databases for analytics use, and for full-stack developers, who help manage a companys front-end and back-end technologies, says Louer. He adds that Internet of Things architects, who develop applications and devices with internet connectivity such as for smart homes, also are seeing significant demand. Additional demand is driven by non-tech companies that need tech skills, such as cyber security, database and system administrators and web development. I recall a prominent CEO of an insurance company stating about six years ago, We are no longer an insurance company, we are a tech company, says Andrew Carges, vice president of global talent acquisition at GoDaddy, a web hosting company based in Scottsdale, Arizona. It was around that time the tech job market really got interesting. More and more companies are embracing and leveraging technology, which has increased demand for tech employees. Silicon Valley Isnt the Only Hot Spot California is still leading the pack when it comes to paying for tech talent. Los Angeles, now referred to as Silicon Beach, continues to have strong tech salaries, says Marissa Peretz, founder and recruiting consultant for Silicon Beach Talent, a tech recruiting firm in Los Angeles. Other tech hubs such as San Francisco, Boston, New York City, Seattle and Austin also have a vibrant market for tech and are showing high demand and an increase in wages. Carges says the San Francisco area is still showing growth in tech salaries, with high sign-on bonuses and equity packages. But other regions are seeing growth in their tech sectors. A common thought is that the startups in Silicon Valley are sucking up all the tech talent. Thats not the case, says Go Daddys Carges. He says GoDaddy alone has hired thousands of tech employees over the past four years in places such as Phoenix, Boston and Seattle. Benefits Can Make the Difference Employers who hire tech workers may need to sweeten the deal with other options that go beyond base pay. While most employers are raising salaries to attract the best technical talent, a lot are also offering additional compensation through profit-sharing bonuses, paid relocation or paid training and tuition reimbursement, says Katy Imhoff, owner and CEO of Camden Kelly, a tech recruiting firm in Dallas. These benefits add value to technical employees overall compensation and attract more qualified candidates than the slight upticks in salaries were seeing. Other benefit options might include subsidized child care, meals, transportation allowances, personal services and other perks, Peretz says. In addition, growing companies may consider offering equity ownership for highly-skilled employees.

This is the best day to take off from work during Fourth of July week

This is the best day to take off from work during Fourth of July week This is the best day to take off from work during Fourth of July week In many ways, the Fourth of July is the best holiday. It’s all the drinking of Christmas minus all the hanging out with your awful family, it’s all the food of Thanksgiving without all the hanging out with your awful family, and it’s all the missing work of a funeral without all the hanging out with your awful family. Plus it’s a whole weekend’s worth of eating, drinking fireworks and pledging to the flag…or whatever. According to a new Office Plus survey of 430 white-collar professionals, 58% of workers will be taking at least one day off during the fourth of July week, with Friday being the most frequently cited day by 82%.  Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!Fired-works“The Fourth of July week will essentially be a lost one for businesses as the bulk of professionals are taking time off during the holiday week. And the few workaholics that aren’t taking time off may be showing up to the office with a slight hangover the day after the fireworks,” the authors behind the Office Pulse survey report.  Again, the vast majority of professionals are eyeing the Friday after the fourth to treat themselves to an Independence day off by 82%, though 19% plan to take off on the previous Monday, 23% plan to take off on the previous Tuesday, and 37% intend to call out of work on the previous Wednesday. Of the brave troops that said they plan on coming that day, 26% said they expect to be either hungover or extra tired, which is 7% higher than the number that said this last year when surveyed by Office Pulse.  Older professionals seemed to need the time to recuperate more than the younger respondents, given 62% of them reported no intention of coming in following the fireworks. Senior management was found to be even more keen on the idea of taking the day, with a shocking 78% reporting so.    AAA reports that 2019 will experience the highest amount o f Americans traveling on Independence day since the organization started keeping track back in 2000. Just about 49 millions citizens plan on doing a bit of traveling on for the Fourth, which is 4.1% more that did so last year.

Nearly 50% of women stress out about repeating outfits at work

Nearly 50% of women stress out about repeating outfits at work Nearly 50% of women stress out about repeating outfits at work There are a lot of reasons to admire Kate Middleton. Her philanthropic work, her devotion to her children, and let’s not forget that she is a commoner who managed to land a prince basically making her life the same as that of a Disney heroine. But another reason you should admire her? The woman is not afraid to repeat an outfit.  In fact, she does it all the time. She finds something that works and she wears it often. And why shouldn’t she? Just because she has a royal budget, why shouldn’t she rewear a beautiful piece of clothing even if it has been photographed? But apparently, most of us aren’t as brave as the Duchess of Cambridge (maybe if we all had more tiaras available to us) as according to a new survey of 2,700 professional from  Thrive Global and  The Business of Fashion  about how the way people dress for work affects their psychology. The survey found that 49% of the female respondents reported that they have felt self-conscious about repeating outfits at work. In addition to feeling like you shouldn’t repeat outfits in front of your colleagues, social media now also “kills” outfits. That is why we are seeing so many rental clothing companies pop up. Rent the Runway to start then Le Tote, Style Lend, and Gwynnie Bee to name a few. Now you can even rent workout clothes from Routinely. The world is encouraging you to never wear the same outfit twice even though it may be your favorite and as a result, women are spending major money on their work attire. The survey found that  more than 29% of respondents said they’ve spent $500 or more on work clothes over the past six months, 19% spend $300-$499 and 20% dole out $200-$299. Just a tiny 14% said they spent less than $99.Though men were included in the monetary results above male professionals are not facing this kind of pressure as their female counterparts. They are expected to just have a few quality suits that they wear to everything. So women have more pressure on what they wear and a re spending more on it? Yes. But according to Diane von Furstenberg women should rethink the whole repeating outfits is a sin school of thought.   The fashion designer icon said repeating outfits shows you have a strong sense of style and you are owning it.She told Thrive, “When you wear something you like - maybe you’ll even get it in different colors - you begin to have your style. I’m  all  for repetition,” Furstenberg says. Fashion designer Thom Browne told The New York Times recently, “I think there’s something refreshing when you see someone who has a true sense of their own style. There is a real confidence in being able to project that image,’’ he added. “I hope that’s what people see as well.”If you look into it, you’ll start to notice that many successful people have a work uniform. Steve Jobs clearly sticks out with his signature black turtleneck. But so do Christine LaGarde, Ruth Bader Ginsberg, Sheryl Sandberg, and Hillary Clinton and, of cours e, Middleton. Not a bad group to be in … even if you are all dressed the same.
